11-1pm Bedouin Dance

2-4pm Ghawazee Dance
Ghawazee dance workshop focusing on the Banat Mazin of Luxor. The Ghawazee are the famed female dancers described so often in Western travelers' accounts since the 18th century, and probably the major wellspring of Egyptian danse orientale. A hundred and fifty years ago, professional female dancers of both Cairo and the countryside were called "Ghawazi;" now the term Ghawazi is used in Egypt to describe the dancers of the countryside who still perform in the traditional manner, who had not added anything to their repertoire from ballet, Latin American or modern Western dance as the "oriental dancers" of Egyptian city nightclubs have done. The banat Mazin were the three eldest Mazin sisters Suad, Atuha and Firiyah who danced together in the 50s and 60s and became the preeminent ghawazee performers in Egypt.
- Sunday, October 2, 2011: Oriental Focus
11-1pm, Egyptian Cinema Era
Classic Cinema Era (1940s-1950s), featuring signature steps by such dancers as Tahia Carrioca and Samia Gamal? Oriental is based on the baladi style but was further developed by Samia Gamal, Tahiya Karioka, Naima Akef, and other dancers who rose to fame during the golden years of the Egyptian film industry. This has come to be considered the classical style of dance in Egypt. These dancers were famous not only for their role in Egyptian films, but also for their performances at the "Opera Casino" opened in 1925 by Badia Masabni. This venue was a popular place for influential musicians and choreographers from both the US and Europe.
2-4pm, Egyptian Transitional Era
Transition decade (1960s) Egyptian Orientale dance workshop featuring steps by dancers such as Soheir Zaki and Fifi Abdou? Influenced by artists that came before them, Sohair Zaki, Fifi Abdou, and Nagwa Fouad all rose to fame between 1960 and 1980, and are still popular today. Some of these later dancers were the first to choreograph and perform dances using a full 'orchestra' and stage set-up, which had a huge influence upon what is considered the 'classical' style.
An additional, optional warm-up will be led by a local instructor at 10:30am each day.
